Experiences with the Bling allowance app for Android and iOS
The Bling allowance app is available for Android and iOS devices. It offers a variety of features that help children and teens manage their money and build financial skills. The app is easy to use and provides a high level of control and security for both children and parents.
Track income and expenses: App features
With Bling, your child can manage their allowance in one app. They can set savings goals and split their money across different buckets such as savings, spending, and gifts.
Income and expenses can be tracked closely to build a better understanding of money. In addition, your child can earn their allowance via the app by completing tasks such as hanging laundry, emptying the dishwasher, & more. The Bling allowance app also offers learning materials that convey financial knowledge.
Set your child’s budget easily with Bling
Children and teens can set budgets with Bling to ensure they spend their money wisely. They can decide how much to spend on categories like clothing or leisure activities.
The app also lets you support your child in managing their allowance. You can see how they spend and help them make better decisions. You can also set rules such as how much allowance per week they should receive and which expenses are allowed.
High security standards for the Bling account
The Bling app offers various security measures to ensure users’ personal data and financial information are protected. These include strong encryption, regular security reviews, access controls, verification methods, and strict data protection policies. The company does not share user data with third parties unless legally required or the user has consented. Overall, Bling provides a secure and reliable way to manage deposited funds.
Bling Card lost? How secure is the children’s credit card
Thanks to the PIN process, Bling credit cards for children and teens are well protected. If the card is lost, it can be blocked like any regular credit card.
The Bling prepaid card also has the advantage of not being directly linked to a bank account. Therefore, loss of the card has no direct impact on a regular bank account.
The Bling Card offers additional useful features such as spending limits, real-time transaction notifications, and the ability to manually lock or unlock the card via the Bling app.
Change the PIN: Is that possible?
The PIN is set by you as the parent during registration. For security reasons, it is not possible to change the card PIN afterwards. If you or your child have forgotten the PIN, you can view it in the Bling app:
Open and unlock the Bling app
Select the relevant card in the app
Tap the “PIN” button under the card image
Enter your password or use Face ID
You may be prompted to enter an SMS verification code
Press and hold the “show” button to view the card PIN
Personalise the Bling Card
Another plus: The children’s credit card can be personalised. Children and teens can choose from a wide range of designs. Whether football, astronaut, hot-air balloon, horse, or a neutral pattern – your child has the choice. A great design makes using the card twice as fun.
Alternative to Volksbank, Sparkasse & co. – The company behind Bling
Bling, or Bling Services GmbH, was founded in June 2021 in Berlin. The family fintech started as an allowance app to strengthen the financial skills of children and teens. Today, tens of thousands of families use the Bling app. Since June 2023, families can invest sustainably via Bling. In February 2024, the company also launched a mobile phone plan called Bling Mobile. Developed in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom, it was designed specifically for families with children.
Bling Mobile – The mobile service for children
In March 2024, Bling expanded its offering by introducing “Bling Mobile,” a family-friendly mobile service in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom. This service provides child-appropriate features such as parental controls and internet filters to promote safe media use. Bling Mobile is available in two tariffs that offer monthly flexibility.
The company aims to support families not only financially but also in media literacy and to establish itself as a comprehensive “operating system for families.”
Conclusion: Is the Bling Card the best children’s credit card or are there better ones?
Short answer: Bling is strong if you want an intuitive allowance app with broad family features (tasks, savings pots, potentially investing features).
However, alternatives may suit you better if you, for example,
- prefer a free solution with a junior current account (incl. card),
- need Apple/Google Pay to be fully stable today
- want to avoid foreign currency fees (e.g., frequent non-EUR payments),
- primarily seek a classic bank product with branch services.
Popular alternatives:
bunq (children’s account) – app-based with parental approval and spending limits; 1 payment and 1 savings account for minors, further sub-accounts depending on plan, debit card depending on plan.
Commerzbank StartKonto – free up to 18 (in some cases up to 27 with proof), Girocard included; from 14 an additional free prepaid junior credit card (up to 18). Cash at Cash-Group ATMs, branch service, photoTAN, parental consent required.
DKB Girokonto u18 – free account management, Visa Debit included, parental rights via Card Control (block, push notifications, country settings); optional junior investment account. Requirement: at least one parent is a DKB customer.
