Costs and bonuses of the Comdirect Junior Depot – Investing money for minors

Savings accounts are becoming increasingly unattractive due to minimal interest rates. By making long-term investments in a Junior Depot, children can benefit from time and compound interest effects. The depot can serve as a financial base for important life phases such as university, vocational training, or a first residence.

Comdirect, a subsidiary of Commerzbank, offers a balanced and smart way to open such a depot. Learn in our analysis about the bonuses you can receive, the documents required for opening, and the costs associated with this depot.

Fees and interest rates of the children's depot

The Comdirect Junior Depot is essentially a free securities account designed specifically for children and adolescents. It allows parents, grandparents, or guardians to invest money for their children and set financial foundations early. With the Junior Depot, you can invest in funds, ETFs, or stocks starting from just €1 and benefit from opportunities in the capital markets.

Account management is free for the first 6 months. After this period, the account remains free if you execute at least 2 trades per quarter or use a securities savings plan. Otherwise, there is a fee of €1.95 per month. Savings plan executions for stocks, ETFs, and certificates cost 1.5% of the order amount per transaction. Standard conditions apply: €4.90 + 0.25% of the order volume.

    Advantages and bonuses at Comdirect

Comdirect offers several discounts and bonuses available to both existing and new customers upon opening.

One such benefit is the Active Trader Discount: With 125 trades per half-year, you receive a 15% discount on the trading fee.

Additionally, until July 16, 2024, upon opening a Junior Depot, you can choose one of four bonuses: including LEGO Classic Bricks, DENVER Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones, a BRIO Cargo Railway Starter Set with Crane, or a BIG Bobby Car Classic.

    ETF-Selection

Comdirect offers a wide selection of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). There are approximately 2,000 ETFs available, sortable via filters. These include equity, money market, and bond ETFs, as well as alternative investments and some index funds not categorized in these groups.

There are over 1,500 ETFs eligible for savings plans, which can be acquired without any transaction fees. Furthermore, Comdirect also provides selected ETFs at favorable conditions under the "Top ETFs" category.

Many of these ETFs can be purchased for €3.90 per transaction in lump-sum investments, and there are no transaction fees for savings plans.

For more details, refer to Comdirect's price and performance list.

    Tax benefits

Like all Junior Depots, there are tax advantages available here as well. Through the "exemption order" that you submit to the bank, you can earn up to €1,000 (as of 2024) in capital gains from the depot without taxation by the tax office. Submitting this application and forms can be done entirely online with Comdirect.

Note: This requires the child's tax identification number and confirmation of guardianship!

    Referral program

Beyond the mentioned advantages, Comdirect also offers a referral program. Those who refer a new customer to Comdirect also benefit themselves! To secure the rewards after successfully opening your own account, follow these steps:

    1. Log in: Log in to your account.
    2. Recommendation: Select your favorite product and send the referral link to friends.
    3. Benefits for Friends: Your friends receive €75 for a checking account and free account management for new depot customers.
    4. Receive a Bonus: As a thank you, you receive €50 for each successful referral.

Documents required to open a Junior Depot

To open a Junior Depot with Comdirect, you will need these documents:

    • Completed application form

    • Child's tax identification number

    • Child's birth certificate (original)

    • Copy of the ID card or passport of all legal guardians

Most documents can be photographed and uploaded via the app. If the child is under 16 years old, Comdirect requires the original birth certificate, which must be sent by mail. However, it will be returned to you afterward.

Please note: The Junior Depot can only be opened by legal guardians. Unfortunately, grandparents, other relatives, or friends cannot do this.

    The Comdirect App

Comdirect also offers a clear app. With it, you can manage your accounts from anywhere. The following functions are possible in the app:

In addition to securities trading, the app also supports photo transfers. Simply scan QR codes or photograph invoice documents to submit transfers. You can also share your own account details via QR code.

Additionally, the app provides a convenient ATM locator for your area. It also displays cash registers in selected stores where you can withdraw money.

Comdirect ensures high security for your app, protecting your data even while on the go. You can download it from the App Store.

    Canceling Comdirect contracts

If you wish to cancel your Comdirect account, you can do so easily.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Write a termination letter stating your address and Comdirect contract details. You can use the Comdirect template in your account to simplify the process.

    2. Review all details and check if you need to comply with notice periods.

    3. Send the termination.

    4. Keep the proof of sending.

Especially for depots, ensure you transfer the funds to a new provider if you wish to continue investing. Comdirect also has a pre-prepared document for this purpose.
